One summer day in 2007 at Carderock in Maryland, I was perched atop a cliff overlooking the Potomac River thinking about how bored I was with my job, visiting the same parks every weekend, just bored with my life in general. I often watched the hawks and buzzards circling high above the cliffs and thought, you know, how cool would that be. To be able to fly away and truly be free! I imagined spreading my wings and stepping off of the rock, swooping down above the water, and circling back up to cruise around the sky. Then it just popped into my mind. Hang gliding! I had no idea at that point what a hang glider was capable of. So I went home that evening and learned what modern hang gliding is all about. The next week, I met up with my brother and took my first lesson on the soft sand dunes at Kitty Hawk Kites. When I got home, I signed up for lessons and I've been absolutely addicted since then. Soaring wingtip to wingtip with hawks, buzzards and even bald eagles is a nearly indescribable experience. The only way to really know what it's like is to get out there and do it yourself!
